Arend Advocacia — The Firm

With over 20 years’ experience in legal practice, Andréia is the firm’s founding partner, with a practice focused on Maritime, Port and Corporate Law. She holds a PhD in Maritime Studies from the Brazilian Naval War College (Escola de Guerra Naval – EGN), having conducted part of her doctoral research at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), and a Master’s degree in Business and Corporate Law from the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos).

Her academic background further includes Professional Legal Education at the University of California, Berkeley Law, together with postgraduate qualifications in Business Law from Unisinos, Environmental Law from PUCRS, Real Estate Law from CESUSC, and Labour Law and Procedure from FEMARGS.

She is the author of “Autonomous Navigation: Civil and Administrative Liability for Marine Casualties and Incidents Involving Autonomous Merchant Cargo Ships – A Legislative Proposal”, published by Editora Dialética in 2026, and of several articles on Maritime Law and arbitration. In 2026, she presented her research on the regulation of civil liability involving autonomous merchant cargo ships at the Comité Maritime International (CMI) Colloquium in Rio de Janeiro.

Alongside her legal practice, she teaches Maritime Law at postgraduate level at the Brazilian Naval War College. Her experience also extends to arbitration, and she is included on the roster of arbitrators of the Câmara de Mediação e Arbitragem (CAMES), as well as on the list of professionals eligible to serve on Dispute Boards maintained by the Câmara de Arbitragem Marítima.

She serves as Southern Brazil Regional Co-Director of the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA Brazil) for the 2025–2026 term. She is also a member of the Brazilian Maritime Law Association (ABDM) and serves on the Maritime, Port, Customs and Inland Waterways Law Committee (CDMPAH), the Arbitration Committee (CA) and the Corporate Law Committee (CAC) of the Brazilian Bar Association, Rio Grande do Sul Section (OAB/RS).

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Her practice focuses on Maritime, Port and Corporate Law, encompassing both advisory and contentious matters.

In Maritime and Port Law, she advises businesses and professionals across the maritime and port sectors, including shipowners, carriers, shipping agents, port operators, shippers, importers, exporters and insurers, as well as other parties involved in navigation, maritime transport and port operations.

Her experience encompasses maritime civil liability, marine casualties and incidents, cargo loss and damage, marine insurance and claims, container demurrage, freight, bills of lading and other contracts of carriage by sea, ship arrest, and maritime and port operations. She also represents clients in administrative proceedings before the Brazilian Maritime Court.

In Corporate Law, she advises businesses on dispute prevention and resolution, the drafting and review of commercial agreements, litigation and arbitration arising from their business activities.

Júlia advises clients on corporate, maritime and port law matters, with particular experience in commercial contracts, civil litigation, risk management, privacy and data protection. Her practice combines legal expertise with a strong understanding of compliance, information security and business processes, enabling her to advise clients on legal and regulatory matters arising from their business activities and operations.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Júlia’s practice encompasses both advisory and contentious corporate work. She advises businesses on the drafting, review and negotiation of commercial agreements, legal risk assessment and business process mapping. On contentious matters, she represents clients in judicial and administrative proceedings, including matters arising in the maritime, port and transport sectors.

Her practice also covers privacy and personal data protection, information security and compliance. She advises businesses on compliance with the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados Pessoais – LGPD), including the assessment of risks associated with the processing of personal data.

Júlia holds a law degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) and a postgraduate qualification in Civil Law and Civil Procedure from the Fundação Escola Superior do Ministério Público (FMP). She is currently pursuing postgraduate studies in Transport Law at the Maritime Law Academy.

She is certified as a Lead Implementer in Privacy Information Management – ISO/IEC 27701 by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT). She also holds ANBIMA certifications in Legal Compliance, Ethics and Investor Profile Analysis, and Investment Funds, as well as the FBB700 certification in Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing (AML/CTF) from FEBRABAN.

She is a member of the Maritime, Port, Customs and Inland Waterways Law Committee (CDMPAH) of the Brazilian Bar Association, Rio Grande do Sul Section (OAB/RS).
